Community CenterOn January 2002, the Junior League of Mexico City took charge of the "Sta. Luisa de Marillac" and "CANAC" lunchrooms turning them into a community center servicing the Segundo Reacomodo del Cuernito and Barrio Norte neighborhoods. The Community Center responds to our volunteers' desire to work more closely with the community. The work is complex, unpredictable and very fullfilling! ![]() At the Community Center we have found a very complex world where injustice and lack of basic needs are part of our users' daily life. We take care of tasks as simple as providing attractive and nutritious lunch menus to offering advice and moral support to our most needy users. We offer several workshops and courses (see sidebar), taught by volunteers and paid teachers. We also have 'Bunko', a creative space where children can develop a love for books and reading and a library with internet access, 'El Cuernilibro'. We have special programs for the elderly such as a Movie club, ballroom dancing and cultural outings. ![]() Our thrift shop "Nuestro Bazar", an offshoot of "La CasiNueva" offers members of the Community Center clothes and some household items at prices varying between $1 and $20 pesos (10¢ - $2 US). We work hard to reinforce children's education, we want to give them the tools they need to build a better future for themselves and their families, that is why working at El Cuernito is so gratifying. |
